Amphibians and Environmental Quality

Amphibians are bioindicators.

Like amphibians, word can hide! Let us look for them.

Have fun and learn!

The amphibian integument

Amphibians can live in several different environments, with plenty of water like aquatic amphibians, or even with little water.
There is an extensive variety of amphibians. They can present different collors, such as yellow, brown, blue, and green. The color of the integument depend on the species.

Let us know a little more about the integument of amphinians.

Amphibian metamorphosis

Do you know how a frog develops?

After the egg deposition by female frogs, the males fertilize the eggs. After that, each egg cell undergoes a series of modification. As development goes on, there are internal and external changes in the body, until the baby frogs exhibit similarities to an adult. This young frog will grow, reproduce, and thus the cycle of life is again complete.

Science for everyone

The project "Educating to Preserve: an exercise of citizenship" participated in the "Bio on the Street" at Quinta da Boa Vista in Rio de Janeiro, showing the photo exhibition "Tom e Contra-Tom" (The schade and the Counter-Shade), organized by students of Biological science at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Apart from seeing photographs of different species of amphibians, visitor could also get ludic material about amphibians and their relationship with the environment. It can be regarded as anoter tool to bring science clooser to the society.

The National Week of Science and Technology

On the first day of the activities of the Nacional Week of Science and Technology, there was a performance bases on the story "The Anfifada and the Enchanted Charm" for the children as well as a photo exhibition named "Tom e Contra-Tom" (The Shade and the Counter-Shade).
As a result, the children could learn a little about amphibians.

"Educating to preserve: an exercise of citzenship" participated in the Nacional Week of Schience and Thecnology

The National Week of Science and Technology occurred from October 18-24 with activities on UFRJ campus.
The proposed theme for this year was "Science for Sustainable Development".

Our goal was to develop scientific communication activities for students focusing on the fact that biodiversity is a constituent of the human being and is important for environmental preservation. Moreover, the exercise of citizenship is the basis for sustainable development. Among the activities, there was a play "The Anfifada and the Enchanted Charm" (based on the book), a photo exposition "Tome Contra-Tom" (The Shade and The Counter-Shade) as well as ludic games that focus on amphibians and their relationship with the environment. These strategies aim to show students the importance of man for environment preservation.

Rinella icterica, male

Rinella icterica, which belongs to Bufonidae Family, is popularly known as common toad. It has rough integument and the male is yellowish. Among its features this toad present the parotoid glands located at the head, posterior to the eyes. In addition, females are usually bigger than males. This toad can be found from the southeast to south of Brazil.

Proceratophrys boiei, male

Proceratophrys oiei is an anuran from the Leptodactylidae Family, being endemic in Brazl, i.e., occurring only in Brazil.
This frog inhabits the forest of subtropical ou tropical low humidity. It has integument appendages in the upper eyelids, resembling horns. The color of its integument varies from gray to brown and has dark brown longitudinal spots on its back. It is found in the forest floor, and because of its color, it looks like dry leaves. Therefore, the color of the skin is a perfect camouflage for protection against predatos and helps prey capture.

Educating to Preserve: an investment in children

"Educating to preserve: an investment in children" was the interview that Prof. Lycia de Brito-Gitirana gave to the Centre of Health Science at UFRJ.

In that interview, Prof. Lycia talked about the aims of the project, the assistance to teacher as well as some of the achivements the project has reached.
When asked about the returning of knowledge to society, Prof. Lycia replied: "we cannot be isolated in our laboratories or classrooms, since University give us the opportunity to promote of campus social activities. In addition, through education, people recover their self-esteem and improve with the society"

Books

As part of this projetc, Dr. Lycia has wirtten two books: "Getting to know the Amphibians" and "The Anfifada and The Enchanted Charm".

The Anfifada and the Enchanted Charm

The play “The Anfifada and Enchanted Charm” based on the book was first staged at the 3rd Symposium on Amphibians (SIMANF) in 2008, being performed several times since then.

The following text was taken from an article published on the website of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro on June 3, 2008, and can be fully read here.

After the opening, students from the 2nd term of Biological Sciences at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro staged the story "The Anfifada and the Enchanted Charm," written by Dr. Lycia Gitirana, in order to arise children´s interest about amphibians. The play emphasizes the Anuran Order, which means “no tail”, and refers to frogs, toads and tree frogs. Salamanders and caecilians, mentioned at the beginning ot this text, belong nto Urodela ou Caudata Order, which are tetrapods with tails, and Gymnophiona or Apoda, amphibians without legs.
